Autumn vibes: decorating home with natural materials

 October 2021

Sometimes I get an unstoppable need to create. And it involves all sorts of things, from trying out a new pie recipe to writing a poem. This time, I was excited about autumn decorations from natural materials! I thought through what I wanted to collect and arrange, and I spent a few days planning everything out and couldn't wait for the time to do it. After all, autumn is my season and I want to fully enjoy it. I don't think anyone can be in a bad mood after spending nice time on a walk, picking rose hips, twigs, colourful leaves, walnuts, cones and surround themselves with the wild warm shades of autumn nature.

Thistles, twigs of rose hip, cornelian cherry and hawthorn are perfect for arranging in a vase. I also used a juice jar, and it looks very nice. Then I put on the thread rose hips. I recommend threading them close to the black tip, not through the centre, because that's where the needle gets stuck in the seeds. The final product is a chain, which can be hung on the window. After a while rose hips dry completely and last all year long.

Of course, I had to get pumpkins of various shapes and colours. Including a Pattypan squash, which looks really exceptional. The cashier in the shop asked me curiously what I was going to cook with it. I said that for now I am going to have it as a decoration, and I will see then. He nodded understandingly. I don't think anyone really knows how to use it in the kitchen. Neither do I. Anyway, pumpkins make the right cosy, homey atmosphere and they are autumn “must have”.

Next, I arranged into a small basket dried slices of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. They can be dried in the oven at about 90°C or on radiators. And they made my apartment smell wonderful. I added with the citruses into the basket walnuts that I picked on one of my walks. Also, glass jar can be used instead of basket and with various combinations of filling (stones, cones, nuts, dried fruit).

I guess the citrus slices can be but put on a thread as well and hang up. It would also be nice to make an autumn wreath on the door. There are plenty of ways how to decorate our homes and bring joy and colours to autumn days😊
