Finally, my favourite season is here! Autumn in its all glory. I must say I´ve been enjoying it fully: picking apples, berries and mushrooms. Making marmalades, baked tea, pickled mushrooms, compotes. Drying and freezing supplies for winter. Enjoying fall walks as autumn nature is for me magical. Morning fog, colourful leaves that glow like a gold, moist and crispy forest.




I like to make it very autumnally cosy at home. I think that the nicest fall decorations can be found in nature! This year I came with a new idea: glass bowl filled with acorns, pinecones, and lights. We have it on the kitchen table. I also made my traditional chain from rose hips and put leaves in the vases. It made our home very warm.



Another autumn decoration was more challenging to make. I´ve been learning with a sewing machine, and my first real project was to make pillowcases. I planned to arrange them in the living room. In the shop with fabrics, I was like Alice in Wonderland. So many nice patterns, materials, colours. I chose brown gold velvet fabric and another one with the pattern of yellow waterlily. The two fabrics matched each other in colour. First pillowcase took me hours. And I'm not exaggerating. I sewed and ripped and sewed again. My piece of fabric was getting smaller, and I had to use smaller pillow than I originally intended. Next two pillowcases were much easier. In the end, it was all worth it. I´m very happy with the result and proud that I eventually succeeded. It looks atmospheric how the leaves outside the window are tone in tone with the pillows.




Autumn and baking belong together because there is a lot of harvesting. This year was very good for mushrooms, and we also picked a decent amount of lingonberries. So, it gave me a lot of possibilities for trying new recipes, both salty and sweet.

Finnish Laskiaispulla - heaven in the mouth

Laskiaispulla is one of my favourite Finnish sweet pastries.  It´s a light fluffy yeast dough, in Finnish pulla , cut and filled with almond paste or strawberry marmalade and decent amount of whipped cream. Extremely delicious! Now it´s a very good time to enjoy it, because it´s connected to the fasting before Easter when the meat is avoided. It pops up in cafes and shops, but the best is homemade anyway. Baking feels cosy and it´s nice to fill home with cardamon smell. For me, yeast dough was always challenging. Czech sweet pastry is also based a lot on yeast dough, and I like it very much, so I tried it several times. But the result wasn´t often as it should be. Sometimes my trials ended up hard and dry or had strong yeast smell. I think that I was making mistake in the method. My traditional Christmas in Finland

 December 2022 A real winter fairy tale awaited us when me and Petri celebrated Christmas in the Finnish countryside with his mum and her husband.  The travel itself was incredibly romantic. Four hours in the train, a snowy landscape with frozen lakes passing by, and we were excited for Christmas. For the first time in my life, I was in a dining wagon. I had already discovered that Finns are not used to prepare homemade sandwiches. However, they don't mind buying something in a shop, where they often reach for a karjalanpiirakka , but they won't prepare the classic bread with something. That's why they need trains with a dining wagon, which are not common in the  Czech republic , because there we have supplies from home.
